The EIA reports that Pennsylvania produced more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paenergyratings.com\/pennsylvania-natural-gas-rates-by-city\">natural gas<\/a> than any state other than Texas in 2017, making up 19% of the total natural gas production in the U.S. for the same year. The rest of Pennsylvania\u2019s energy production comes largely from nuclear power. But does it really generation half of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paenergyratings.com\/pennsylvania-electricity-rates-by-city\">Pennsylvania\u2019s electricity<\/a>?<\/p>\n<h3>How much of Pennsylvania\u2019s electricity actually comes from natural gas?<\/h3>\n<p>In June 2018, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/electricity\/data\/browser\/#\/topic\/0?agg=1,0,2&amp;fuel=08&amp;geo=vvvvvvvvvvvvo&amp;sec=o3g&amp;linechart=ELEC.GEN.NUC-PA-1.M~ELEC.GEN.NUC-PA-94.M~~~&amp;columnchart=ELEC.GEN.NUC-US-99.M~ELEC.GEN.NUC-PA-99.M~ELEC.GEN.NUC-IL-99.M&amp;map=ELEC.GEN.NUC-US-99.M&amp;freq=M&amp;start=200801&amp;end=201806&amp;ctype=linechart&amp;ltype=pin&amp;rtype=s&amp;maptype=0&amp;rse=0&amp;pin=\">nuclear generation<\/a> in Pennsylvania was 7,144 thousand MW, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/electricity\/data\/browser\/#\/topic\/0?agg=1,0,2&amp;fuel=8&amp;geo=vvvvvvvvvvvvo&amp;sec=o3g&amp;linechart=~~~ELEC.GEN.COW-PA-1.M~ELEC.GEN.COW-PA-94.M&amp;columnchart=ELEC.GEN.COW-US-99.M~ELEC.GEN.COW-US-1.M~ELEC.GEN.COW-US-94.M&amp;map=ELEC.GEN.COW-US-99.M&amp;freq=M&amp;start=200801&amp;end=201806&amp;ctype=linechart&amp;ltype=pin&amp;rtype=s&amp;pin=&amp;rse=0&amp;maptype=0\">coal-fired generation<\/a> was 3,688 thousand MW, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/electricity\/data\/browser\/#\/topic\/0?agg=1,0,2&amp;fuel=1&amp;geo=vvvvvvvvvvvvo&amp;sec=o3g&amp;linechart=ELEC.GEN.NG-PA-1.M~ELEC.GEN.NG-PA-94.M~~~~&amp;columnchart=ELEC.GEN.NG-US-99.M~ELEC.GEN.NG-CA-99.M~ELEC.GEN.NG-FL-99.M~ELEC.GEN.NG-TX-99.M&amp;map=ELEC.GEN.NG-US-99.M&amp;freq=M&amp;start=200801&amp;end=201806&amp;ctype=linechart&amp;ltype=pin&amp;rtype=s&amp;maptype=0&amp;rse=0&amp;pin=\">natural gas<\/a> 6,493 thousand MW. This gives a total of 17,325 thousand MW, and means that coal is generating less than a third of Pennsylvania\u2019s energy, with nuclear and natural gas each coming in at under half. Natural gas has been catching up to nuclear energy over the years, however, and with the news of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/pittsburgh\/news\/2018\/04\/02\/firstenergy-subsidiaries-file-for-chapter-11.html\">FirstEnergy\u2019s bankruptcy<\/a> and plans to shut down two nuclear plants in the near future, it seems likely that natural gas will move in and pick up the bulk of that load.<\/p>\n<h3>Changes to the market thanks to natural gas<\/h3>\n<p>The price of natural gas has been consistently falling over the years. In Jun 2008, the spot price at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/dnav\/ng\/hist\/rngwhhdm.htm\">Henry Hub<\/a> reached a high of $12.69 mmBtu (dollars per million BTU), but by August 2018 the price had fallen to just $2.96 mmBtu. Production of natural gas in the U.S. has increased dramatically in recent years, and an increase in supply generally results in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/energyexplained\/index.php?page=natural_gas_factors_affecting_prices\">lower prices<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In comparison, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/coal\/markets\/#tabs-prices-2\">spot price of coal<\/a> in Central Appalachia for the week ending September 21, 2018 was $2.97 per mmBtu, while the total operating costs for U.S. nuclear plants in 2017, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nei.org\/CorporateSite\/media\/filefolder\/resources\/fact-sheets\/nuclear-by-the-numbers-20180412.pdf\">Nuclear Energy Institute<\/a>, was $33.61 MWh. But the cost of running a coal or nuclear power plant is expensive, and it means they struggle with the abundance of cheaper natural gas.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/ne\/articles\/nuclear-power-most-reliable-energy-source-and-its-not-even-close\">Nuclear power plants<\/a> are designed to operate for longer periods of time, up to two years, without the need for refueling. Because of their complexity, however, nuclear and coal plants also take a long time to shut down and also bring up to full power. Natural gas is not only cheap, but the most efficient natural gas plants (called &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/eere\/amo\/combined-heat-and-power-basics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Combined Heat and Power<\/a>&#8221; or CHP plants) \u00a0use both boilers and turbines to produce energy. Some &#8220;combined cycle&#8221; natural gas fired plants can bring themselves to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.siemens.com\/hq\/pool\/hq\/energy-topics\/pdfs\/en\/combined-cycle-power-plants\/PowerGen2007PaperFinal_.pdf\">full operational capacity<\/a> in just 10 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Because the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paenergyratings.com\/resources\/pennsylvania-energy-deregulation-history\">deregulated electricity market<\/a> in Pennsylvania is based on demand per hour, generators need to be more agile in order to respond to rising and falling demand during the course of a regular day. As a result of cheap, plentiful natural gas, coal and nuclear generators are having a hard time competing.\u00a0\u00a0In March 2018, FirstEnergy Corp announced that its nuclear and coal power plants had filed for bankruptcy.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, gas-fired generation outpaced coal-fired generation for the first time, and structural changes in the market have also led to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/conference\/2017\/pdf\/presentations\/rob_didona.pdf\">the fall of coal<\/a>.
