First, there’s the initial cost of purchasing the item. Then, there’s the monthly cost of using it. You’ll be paying this on your electricity bill every month for as long as you use the machine.

Thankfully, the Energy Star program makes knowing costs easy. Appliances that are Energy Star certified have labels that explain their average annual energy use. You can also compare appliances on their site to find the best match for your needs.

Find the Right Energy Saving Appliance for You

In an average home, there are five big energy using appliances; refrigerators, freezers, water heaters, clothes washers, and dishwashers. Energy Star qualified appliances are required to use less energy than non-qualified models. They are also competitively priced.

Energy Star Refrigerators are about 9 percent more energy efficient and can save about $230 over a 12-year lifetime.

A qualified chest freezer is at least 10 percent more energy efficient, using only $30 per year to run.

Highly efficient Heat pump water heaters can save a household of 4 about $550 per year over a standard model.

Energy Star clothes washers use about 20% less energy and 33% less water.

Dishwashers likewise save energy and water, costing only about $50 a year to run.

Shopping Pro Tip — Looking for a smaller appliance?
