We dig into the details to show you how to shop the best electric rates and save more.

Good news for DLC customers! While other utilities are requesting rate hikes, Duquesne Light is has filed to lower their default supply rate. However, this filing only covers certain customers. But, it could mean falling residential price to compare (PTC) rates in the near future. Don’t worry, we will explain how this could affect your home electricity bill.

Duquesne Light Commercial and Industrial Rate Drops

DLC has filed with the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commision (PUC) to lower their default supply rates for Industrial and Commercial customers. This 11% drop will last from September 1, 2024 to November 30, 2024.

But, we don’t have the final PTC rate yet. The default supply rate only covers the generation price for electricity. The official PTC price will also include transmission costs and the state tax adjustment surcharge. The PUC must approve the changes before the full PTC price is published.

Possible Default Rate Cuts for Duquesne Light Residential Customers

Historically, DLC has lowered their C and I customer rates before filing changes for residential customers. So, assuming your default supply rate drops by 11% as well, we can predict what the new PTC rate might be.

Currently, the DLC PTC rate is 10.53 cents per kWh. The default supply portion of this is 8.12 cents per kWh. If we lower this by 11%, we get a default supply rate of 7.31 cents per kWh. Let’s assume all of the other charges stay the same. This means we could be looking at a PTC rate of around 9.72 cents per kWh!

Shop to Beat DLC Default Rates

But don’t let this fool you! You can save even more by shopping for your electricity rate. If we estimate an average energy use of 854 kWh, then your bill with the predicted PTC rate would be around $83. We can do better than that with current prices!

For instance, you might want to check out Public Power and their Electric 12 Month Fixed Rate with MRC. They are offering this plan at at only 9.09 cents per kWh to new customers only. With the additional $9.95 monthly charge, your electricity bill comes out to $87.58 a month. While it’s a little more than the predicted PTC, you’d keep this low rate for a year. And, there’s always a chance they don’t lower the residential rate as much as predicted. There is also an early termination fee of $50 to be aware of.

The Frontier Utilities A Frontier Secure Power 12 plan at only 8.99 cents per kWh offers more savings. Combined with the $9.95 monthly charge, your electricity bill will come out to about $86.72 a month. Again, a little more than the predicted PTC but only if the predicted PTC rate is correct. You can also keep this low rate for a year and you’ll save more money over time. Plus, there’s no termination fees to worry about!

Finally we have the Santanna Energy Fixed Rate Electricity 12. At 9.65 cents per kWh it’s the highest rate. But, with no monthly charges, your electricity bill will be about $82.41 a month. The savings are marginal, but again, you get to keep this low rate for the entire year. There is an early termination fee of $120 to be aware of.

Shop Smart with PA Energy Ratings

You want to find the best electricity rate possible, and save as much money as you can.
