With more demand for carbon-free,\u00a0cheap electricity<\/a>, and rising use, the energy market is changing. Faced with this, PA lawmakers have been debating the cost of restarting Three Mile Island<\/a>. But it seems others have seen the worth in Three Mile Island. Microsoft <\/a>has signed a deal with Constellation Energy <\/strong>to revive the only working reactor on the island. But the costs of a restart could still fall on PA consumers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why Power Up Three Mile Island?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

For the last decade, the PA grid has sent out power based on\u00a0electricity demand<\/a>. And as a result, focus has been on building power plants that can vary their output. But, with more electric vehicles, crypto, and data centers, baseload power need has returned. Baseload power means keeping a small but steady amount on the grid at any given time. Coal and nuclear are both great sources of baseload power. But coal is being steadily phased out, leaving nuclear energy to make a comeback. Some consumers are pinning their hopes on it to supply power at the cheapest electric rates<\/a>.

Currently, the entire PJM Interconnection<\/a><\/strong> grid is facing a power supply shortage. With higher energy demand than ever before, power plants are retiring while interconnections have stalled. So, prices are already rising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Investing in nuclear power right now not only seems practical but it can help states reach their green energy goals. Nuclear power is a carbon-free energy source, producing very few greenhouse gasses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Costs of Restarting Three Mile Island <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

However, the costs of a reactor restart are not cheap. Constellation<\/strong> hopes to receive federal support for the restart<\/a>, to the tune of a $1.6 Billion taxpayer backed loan. But, if for some reason the loan isn’t paid back, that leaves PA taxpayers in the fallout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Constellation <\/strong>insists that need not be a worry. In a statement to the Washington Post<\/a><\/em>, the company said, “Rest assured that to the extent we may seek a loan, Constellation <\/strong>will guarantee full repayment. Any notion that taxpayers are taking on risk here is fanciful given that any loan will be backstopped by Constellation’s entire $80-billion-plus value.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What this Means for PA Residents <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

At the moment, Microsoft has agreed to buy all of Three Mile Island’s energy for the next 20 years. Which means the PA electricity grid wouldn’t see any direct benefit from the reactor restart for some time.

But there are other factors to consider. For instance, a PA construction trades study<\/a> suggests that a reactor restart could provide up to 3,400 jobs. That amount of jobs may send some PA lawmakers scrambling to add more capacity to the state’s grid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
