And Duquesne Light is bringing good news to their medium commercial and Industrial customers. But more importantly, this might mean the residential Price to Compare (PTC) rate may be falling next. If that’s so, then here’s what to expect and how you can find a lower electricity rate.

Duquesne Light Rate Changes

DLC recently filed with the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) to lower their default supply rates for Industrial and Commercial customers. Previously, the supply rate was 6.7470 cents per kWh. Starting March 1, 2025 this will drop to 5.499 cents per kWh.

However, this isn’t the PTC rate. The default supply rate only covers the generation price for electricity. The official PTC price will also include transmission costs and the state tax adjustment surcharge. The PUC must approve the changes before the full PTC price is published.

Shop and Save on Falling Duquesne Light Rate

Over the years, we’ve noticed that DLC usually lowers their C and I customer rates before filing similar changes for residential customers. While this doesn’t always happen, it could mean that lower PTC rates are heading your way.

Let’s assume that the PTC rate falls from 10.85 cents per kWh to just 10 cents per kWh. If we estimate an average energy use of 854 kWh, then your monthly bill could drop from an average of $92.65 to $85.40. But don’t let this fool you! You can save even more by shopping for an electricity plan.

For instance, we have a fantastic plan from Think Energy. Their Think Basic 4 plan is currently 8.99 cents per kWh for 4 months. That places your monthly energy supply costs around $76.77. Including their monthly supply charge, that brings your total bill to an average of $86.72. So that means the average price of energy is closer to 10.15 cents per kWh. While that’s slightly higher than our predicted future PTC rate, your comparative savings will increase if you use more electricity. And with no early termination fees, you have flexibility to leave the plan if your situation changes.

Next, from Xoom Energy, we have the Sure Lock 6 plan. This six month fixed rate plan is 10.69 cents per kWh, lower than the current PTC rate. That would bring your monthly energy supply costs to around $91.29. And that’s with no monthly charges to worry about! There is an early termination fee of $55 to be aware of. While it’s a little more than our predicted PTC, there’s always a chance DLC won’t lower the residential rate as much as we’re predicting. Plus, this 6 month plan ends right in the spring shoulder months when rates fall. You could snap up an ever better deal then.

Save with PA Energy Ratings

If these plans aren’t to your taste, don’t worry!
