Compare the best electric supplier deals with lower prices.

Last summer’s PJM capacity auction sent mutterings of rising electricity prices. So, while we were anticipating rate hikes this summer, we hoped for low ones. Unfortunately, the Duquesne Light Company (DLC) default rate is now poised to go up by at least 15%! In addition, this summer is predicted to be particularly hot. And with higher electric usage comes higher electric bills.

Thankfully, you can still find good deals on electricity plans. We’re going to explain how these rate changes will affect your summer DLC electricity bill. And how you can shop and save.

Duquesne Light Rate Changes

DLC recently notified the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) they would increase their default supply rates for residential customers. Previously, the supply rate was 8.4472 cents per kWh. Starting June 1, 2025, this will increase to 9.79023 cents per kWh.

However, this isn’t the PTC rate. The default supply rate only covers the generation price for electricity. The official PTC price will also include transmission costs and the state tax adjustment surcharge. The PUC must approve the changes before the full PTC price is published. So the actual PTC rate will be even higher!

Save on the Rising Duquesne Light Rate

Currently, the DLC PTC rate is 10.850 cents per kWh. But on June 1, that rate will jump to 12.1930 cents per kWh. The average Pennsylvania residential consumer uses 978.97 kWh during the summer months. So your summer electricity supply charges could rise from $106.22 to a sweltering $119.37! And the total bill with distribution charges will be even higher still!

Thankfully, you’ve got cheaper options!

For instance, customers who want an affordable plan to carry them through the summer should consider Think Energy. Their Think Basic 6 plan comes in at 11.30 cents per kWh, running you about $110.62 a month in energy supply costs. However, in addition to having no monthly charges or early termination fees, Think Energy offers a referral program. Their Free Energy Club offers rebates for referring friends to the company, earning you a discount on your bill.

New customers to Frontier Utilities who want to lock in a low rate for the year will love their PA Frontier Secure Power 12 plan. This gold rate provider plan comes with no early termination fees, offering you flexibility. Their rate is 11.99 cents per kWh, with an addition $9.95 monthly supply charge. That brings your summer energy supply cost to an estimated $128.38, or 13.11 per kWh. But, the more electricity you use, the less that monthly supply charge affects your price per kWh.

Protect Your Wallet from Rising Electricity Rates

If these plans aren’t to your taste, don’t worry!
