Find out how that could affect your future electric rates.

Electricity prices in PA have been sharply rising. And unfortunately, PA customers may face even higher electric costs in the future. The recent PJM capacity auction for the 2028-29 year hit the FERC approved price cap; $329/MW-Day. However, that’s not the end of the story. For the second year in a row, PJM did not secure enough power to guarantee reliability. As a result, customers and lawmakers are questioning what PA can do to combat ever increasing electricity rates and power demand. So, let’s deep dive into the auction results. And, we’ll also see how you can find cheap electricity for your home.

Capacity Auction Falls Short

To maintain reliability, PJM must plan on how much extra power they would need in case of “once in ten year events” such as severe weather. While this should ensure that the PJM grid works during a crisis, the grid operator fell 6.8 GW short of their reliability requirements.

Falling short isn’t an immediate disaster. However, extreme weather events are becoming more common. In fact, the most recent heat wave saw grid strain in PA. PJM has suggested a backstop auction to help shore up their energy supply numbers, but it remains to be seen how it would work. Or, if prices would rise in response.

PJM Capacity Auction Demand

The main driver of the price increases is data center demand. According to the EIA, data centers in 2024 used more electricity in PA than homes and businesses combined! This demand has sent the average PA electricity prices up by 13%. in the last year alone. By 2030, PJM is expecting 32 gigawatts of new demand on its system, 30 gigawatts of which coming from data centers.

As most ratepayers know, the auction’s price cap shields PA consumer bills from auction prices going $8.3 billion higher. However, the cap doesn’t solve the core problem. PJM needs more power for its grid. For years, the PJM interconnection has been retiring generators faster than it replaces them. In 2024, tight supply combined with rising data center demand sent capacity auction prices jumping.

So while PA lawmakers battle out utility reform to help lower immediate costs, a question remains. How do we get more power on the grid?

Stay Ahead of Rising Electricity Rates

For PA customers, this auction shows that demand for electricity is still growing. The price cap helped limit costs, but future auctions will still play an important role in electric prices.

In the meantime, it’s important to save money with your PA Electric Choice. Locking in a low fixed rate electric plan now is one of the best ways to start. So compare rates, read reviews, and shop https://www.paenergyratings.com to see the electric plan deals in your area.

[4,90
