The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/products\/analysis_monitoring\/enso_advisory\/ensodisc.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">National Weather Service<\/a> has declared that we have a 90% chance of developing a Super El Ni\u00f1o. But that&#8217;s not all; there&#8217;s a big chance that this will be the strongest El Ni\u00f1o on record since 1950. And thanks to PA&#8217;s unique climate, the impact will vary dramatically across the state. Don&#8217;t worry, we&#8217;re going to explain how a Super El Ni\u00f1o could affect your winter. And how it could change <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paenergyratings.com\/electricity-rates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pennsylvania electric rates<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is a Super El Ni\u00f1o? <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the weather pattern is normal, trade winds in the Pacific ocean blow westward along the equator. This brings hot ocean water into Asia. Cooler water then rises up from the depths along the west coast of the Americas. However, during an <a href=\"https:\/\/oceanservice.noaa.gov\/facts\/ninonina.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">El Ni\u00f1o Southern Oscillation (ENSO)<\/a> event, these trade winds weaken. Hot water stays on the surface of the ocean and heads <em>eastward<\/em>. This shifts weather patterns across the world. For the US, that usually means a wetter winter in the south and along the east coast, and a drier and warmer winter up north.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keep in mind, all <a href=\"https:\/\/elnino.nrcc.cornell.edu\/#Winter_Temperature_and_Precipitation_Outlooks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">forecasts<\/a> come with some uncertainty. While NOAA has predicted there&#8217;s a 90% that this will be a very strong El Ni\u00f1o, it has a 69% chance of this developing into a historic Super El Ni\u00f1o this winter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Warm, Wet Winter for the Coast<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.paenergyratings.com\/electricity-rates\/pennsylvania\/philadelphia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Philadelphia<\/a> residents, and everyone else in eastern PA, should prepare for a wet and warm winter. Complete with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accuweather.com\/en\/winter-weather\/us-winter-forecast-2025-26-snow-cold-ahead\/1817344\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">heavy snowfall<\/a> at the start and end of the season. For ski enthusiasts, this means a great start to the season! However, temperatures could warm up in the middle of winter, bringing more freezing rain and sleet than snow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More importantly though, there&#8217;s a danger of severe storms. Typically during an El Ni\u00f1o, there&#8217;s an increase in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nesdis.noaa.gov\/about\/k-12-education\/severe-weather\/what-noreaster\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">nor\u2019easters<\/a>. Which means heavy rains or snow, strong winds, as well as costal and flash flooding. For instance, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrcc.cornell.edu\/services\/special\/reports\/blizzard2016.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Northeast Blizzard of 2016<\/a> that dumped 30 inches of snow on Allentown occurred during a strong El Ni\u00f1o. So this year, being prepared for wetter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paenergyratings.com\/blog\/seven-tips-to-stay-safe-during-winter-storms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">winter storms<\/a> could be more important than ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dry, Warm Winter Weather for West PA<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paenergyratings.com\/electricity-rates\/pennsylvania\/pittsburgh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pittsburgh<\/a> residents and others in north-western PA though, it&#8217;s another story. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/cle\/research_ENSO_GtLakes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Great Lakes and Ohio Valley<\/a> tend to be drier and hotter than normal in El Ni\u00f1o conditions. That means this winter could come with much lower snowfall than normal in this part of the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, that doesn&#8217;t guarentee protection from winter storms. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.climate.gov\/news-features\/blogs\/enso\/el-ni%C3%B1o-and-stratospheric-polar-vortex\">Polar Vortex<\/a>, those strong winds that lock Arctic air in a circle around the north pole, can weaken in winter during a strong El Ni\u00f1o. And when the vortex weakens, Arctic cold air can spill into the US and Canada. Unfortunately, it&#8217;s hard to predict if and when the polar vortex weakens. But these shocks of extremely cold air can lead to severe winter weather.
