So, it’s no wonder that customers are worried about their PA energy prices. You may be asking, “how much more will my electric bill increase?” We’re going to explain how prices have risen so sharply. And how high they might get. Plus, we’ll show you how to find cheap electricity for your home.

Wholesale Prices Caused Your Electric Bill Increase

Since 2024, prices on the wholesale electricity market have been rapidly rising. High electricity demand, combined with a tight supply, led to price jumps during the PJM capacity auctions. These higher prices are passed on to utilities and electric suppliers that buy the power, and then to you. The average PA electric bill has seen an increase of 51% since 2024.

However, utility distribution charges are rising too. The high demand from data centers has forced utilities to make long overdue updates to the grid. But those updates come at the cost with rate hikes to electric customers added onto their monthly bills.

PA Energy Crisis

Rising rates are making it hard for people to pay their bills. As many as 1 in 4 PA customers have said they’re struggling to pay their utility bills on time. And in 2025, over 387,000 PA households had their utilities shut off. A new record, showing that the state could be facing an affordability crisis.

PA lawmakers are working out different ways to stop the bleeding. Recently, the state house passed a utility reform bill. The aim of it is to cap utility profits and lower your electric bill. And PPL is proposing a new method of billing for transmission costs. This new customer protection would allow them to pass the majority of those costs onto high demand customers, instead of you.

Are Data Centers to Blame for the Electric Bill Increase?

Data centers are driving electricity demand. According to the EIA, data centers in 2024 used more electricity in PA than homes and businesses combined. And the PA PUC is warning that the high energy use, along with the lack of power, will cause grid instability by 2027. Seeing an electric bill increase could be the least of your worries, if the lights won’t even turn on. Thankfully, lawmakers are taking the warnings seriously. And the PUC is creating a commission to address how data centers are effecting your bills.

Shop and Save on Electricity

If these trends continue, your electric bill could increase another $20 next year. But with the development of a historic super El Niño weather pattern, it’s hard to predict what will happen to rates in the coming spring.

Given this uncertainty, it’s critical to shop now for the best electric supplier.
