AEP Energy is the retail electricity and natural gas arm of American Electric Power. AEP ranks among the nation's largest generators of electricity and is the nation's largest electricity transmission system with major supply infrastructures in Texas, Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia, Tennessee, Indiana, Michigan, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Arkansas and Louisiana.
In 2012, AEP began to make major efforts towards expanding into the realm of retail energy with purchases of Blue Star Power in Illinois, as well as plans to pursue retail energy sales in Texas and Ohio. It is expected they will continue to expand into the retail natural gas and electricity markets across the United States.
“ AEP Energy emailed me with an offer of $.074 per kilowatt hour. I attempted to enroll and was told my account with PECO didn't exist. That is because I am with PP&L and no mistake on my part was made with enrolling properly. I then was told the new rate would be $.099. Many other cheaper options!!! FRAUD!!!! ”
“ Extremely poor service. Refused to answer my questions. Very poor communication. ”
“ Everytime we have a storm and the wind blows, our power gies out. We live 5 minutes from town and a month ago it was 4 days getting our power back on. Now here it is 3 to 4 weeks later and our power is out again. My husband is on oxegyn and we are already on day 3 now this time with no power again. Everytime you drive by an electric truck everyone is just standing around. I feel like we are not valued customers. It is 2024 and it takes days to fix a pole? ”
“ They are horrible about getting back to you and they dont push the right buttons on there key boards from home . And they dont care either ”
“ A customer service rep named Brandy from AEP did awesome job getting me all set up with these notifications ”
“ I transferred service recently, the initial customer representative confirm everything is okay with the transfer. Down the road, my service was disconnected. I called AEP, they explained need minimum payment never told originally. If there's another provider in my area I would consider new service. ”
“ Not very friendly over the phone. Only interested in getting your money. ”
“ I was on a payment plan with AEP. Made 2 payments in February, 1 payment in March and a payment April 7 on April 27 while cooking breakfast for my 3 children my power was cut off. I contacted the company because I thought there was a power outage I was told it was diconnected because of payments I explained that I have made the agreed upon payments they reviewed the information and stated i made my March payment 5 days late they then refused to help me said the only thing that could be done is I pay the $641 to restore my power. Your system is seriously flawed if someone is consistently making monthly payments it's outrageous and despicable that you treat people this way. The only reason you still have consumers is because you have cornered the market in this area. You're a disgusting company who gets rich jacking up prices during the hardest months for the less fortunate I do not recommend you to anyone and I pray for the day that we can use alternative energy and no one will need your services. ”
“ Would not let me make a power arrangement. Now my animals have to endure 90+ heat. Thanks aep. Hope your gouging goes well ”
“ Horrible price gouging company. We are on a monthly budget that they said we would pay a certain amount all year around. All of a sudden they send a bill for $529.00 for crappy service. Lots of power surges several times. My husband is on oxygen 24/7 they never sent the form that we would be first in line in case of an outage. I wish we could replace this crappy service. They hire a third party company to take customer service calls and charge the customers for crappy service. ”
“ Im unable to get electrical anywhere else in my area besides AEP. Worst supplier Ive ever had. Power is out almost every other day for no reason. Rains? Power goes out. High winds? Power goes out. Nice day and not a cloud in the sky? Power goes out. Avoid at all costs if possible. ”
“ They were cheap so I went with them. They managed to screw up my accounts so badly-TWICE. They mis-appropriated my payments into the wrong accounts two years in a row meaning I got hit with a large lump sum payment-TWICE. Their customer service people are very nice but do not do what they say they will- it took forever to get the issues resolved ( without compensation for my time) and had to be escalated to "senior people" both times. And both times I was assured it would be handled and rectified. I just got my latest bill and there is an issue AGAIN....so I am on hold with them now. THINK twice before going with AEP. Also, their electric prices are now more expensive then the utility. I have not had a good experience. I also called earlier this week and asked them to cancel my service. I called again today only to find out no one entered the cancellation. ”
“ In my area on Liberty hill rd, Chillicothe Ohio, we are always the last one to have power restored during any outage. My neighbors just down the road 500 in both directions of my home always seem to have power restored days before we do. The power grid in my area is ancient with very little maintenance done. Im considering going all solar power and do away with this pathetic service and upkeep on my lines. I pay my bill faithfully each month but get a hobos treatment. I have contacted the company on 4 different days telling them of trees down on power lines and each time they say they had no calls made to them about that. AEP is good at giving you the runaround and thats the only thing they are good at!! Shame on them!!!!! ”
“ Had my power disconnected at 11:30am Friday morning. Then that person left on vacation. No one able to restore. Hottest days on record for the summer. Against their own policy/law of same day restoration of power before noon against their own policy of notifying person at home at time of disconnect. Only option is to go to court. No wonder they dont care about their customers. ZERO repercussion. Now, planned brown out without notifying customers? Downright wrong. Even an hours notice allows us to prepare (including stores and gas stations). You have a responsibility with all your power. Do better. ”
“ AEP is quick to shut you off. Make your payment before the due date, I mean way before. If theres any kind of delay on your payment (like from your bank) making it into their account you and your kids will be in the cold and dark. ”
“ I used their chat feature to try to work out payment arrangements. The responder gave me a few canned responses. I needed clarification. I was not rude but she hung up the chat before I could rephrase my question. I am thinking the way that she did it, they must be told that it is okay to hang up on people. That actually was my last question so had she answered it, I would not be here but it was really shocking to be typing and the next thing you know, the chat closes. I could have started another chat but if you are having problems paying your bill, I guess it is acceptable for the chat reps to hang up on customers. ”
“ Awful company, do not recommend anyone give them a cent ”
“ I was an AEP Energy customer for several years, earned considerable "rewards" dollars and recently cancelled my contract due to increased rates. Immediately they locked my rewards account and would not allow me to purchase anything from the rewards store. I find this tactic to be akin to punishment for cancelling my contract. My rewards dollars were forfeited and I find this unilateral action very disturbing. I would not recommend AEP Energy to anyone. ”
“ I used my rewards dollars to purchase a Sensi smart thermostat they were marketing through one of their promotions, it was supposed to be "green" and save me a ton of money. Before I installed it I made sure to photograph the wiring of the existing thermostat to ensure I had everything done correctly. This was our first winter in a new house that had a heat pump, which can result in higher than expected heat bills so I was not surprised when my bills in early winter were a little higher than expected. When I received a bill for $576.32 for December's usage we made changes to our lifestyle in order to prevent a bill like that in the future including using our fireplace every single night to provide an additional heat source. This resulted in a bill of $817.56. I called my HVAC professional for a service call and he told me that the thermostat was installed correctly, my heating system was functioning properly, and that my 1 year old heater was a phase-inverter, a top of the line system that should not result in bills like that. The problem was that the Sensi thermostat was not triggering the regular heat, but only using the emergency backup heat component of the heat pump, which is considerably less efficient and more expensive. The thermostat did not indicate it was using emergency heat the entire time, nor did the ap that I was using to check on the heater's usage. So he removed the Sensi thermostat that they sold me and the next month the bill had gone down to $569.07. Average daily usage went down from 208 to 168.6 despite it being an average of 6 degrees cooler. I find it more than a bit odd that the thermostat marketed and sold to me by my electric company resulted in my bill being considerably higher than it should have been for months. I contacted them multiple times and every time I was told to contact a different department. Beware of this company, if there is any issue they will not make any attempt to resolve it. ”
“ As stated in the title AEP is horrible they didn't tell us they were coming turned off the electricity briefly and fried my PS4 then turn the electricity right back on and before I could get out there to stop them they left. Thanks for nothing AEP. I do not recommend making them your electricity provider. ”
