“ I just moved to New Jersey and was not aware that NJ allows 3rd party energy suppliers, so when Smart Energy contacted me, I thought they were part of my electric company (Jersey Central Power & Light). I first spoke with their fast-talking, jargon spewing rep while on my cell phone in my car, so I was unable to check my current KPH rate (which nobody has memorized) but was assured they were offering me a special fixed rate which would "prevent bill increases". They also offered me a $100 Visa gift card if I signed up. My previous average bill with JCP&L was $36 per month. My first bill with Smart Energy was $319 (8x HIGHER)! I called Smart Energy, who first claimed that my consumption went up, but the bill I got from JCP&L (further enforcing the belief that the two were affiliated) said I only used 1 kilowatt more this month. Smart Energy said they don't claim to save anyone money and couldn't explain the actual purpose of their business. They also claimed to have no idea what JCP&L's KPH rate is (even though it's their only competitor), and said they couldn't anticipate my bill being 8x higher. I am a low income, single mother who cannot afford to pay this bill even if it was legitimate. The internet and BBB website are full of reviews from other people who also got scammed by this company, saying the same things I am stating. This company is a scam! ”
“ They hike their prices every month and take advantage of consumers and charge whatever they want. The charges never go down and it gets worse with each month and it is rough on seniors on fixed incomes who have budgets and have to keep paying extra each month. which isn't right. ”

“ Received a what I assumed was a gift card for the electric provider I had switched to a month before. Called to activate and made the mistake of switching because I honestly didnt understand a word the lady was saying because she must have just learned English to work there. Anyway bill went from .08 kWh to .1945972, seriously brought the bill up another $100. I feel so dumb, anyway called to try and cancel it and it took around 45 minutes and had to call multiple times. ”

They are absolutely so unprofessional and absolute thieves. I cancelled my service with them and they choice to only cancel my electric and not the gas. How convenient it was winter. I called over and over to speak with a supervisor and til this day I'm still waiting to hear from a supervisor the best part is they are great at setting up your account that there was no problem with. Lol Bottom line is that now I have to pay for the gas I cancelled. I am a disabled woman with 2 children and a $600 gas bill. They are absolutely a horrible company. I'll be home with no gas or electric cause they want to steal from people. Do not trust this company there are many other smart energy companies to use. ”

Kept receiving info in mail. I called it sounded great they told me, my bill would not go over $$ the current bill I had when I called them.it sounded great I verbally signed up on Dec 23, 2021.
Today 1-7-2022 I received their contract in the mail. After reading it in detailed, I knew I was misrepresented per tel conver that took place in Dec, with regards to a fixed rate.
so immediately I call smart energy to requested to cancel their contact, rep name was Willa from the Outside of the United States , , the representative Willa inform me CMP will not allow them to cancel prior to Jan 13, 2021.
I inform them I as of today 1-7- 2022, I am requesting cancellation of my service with Smart Energy, they refused even after speaking with 2 supervisor. I then called Central Maine Power informed them of the situation, that 3 reps informed they cannot cancel service, until January 13th. 2022. , CMP blocked smart energy from service.
I then called Public Utilities Commissioner filed a formal complaint against Smart Energy for misrepresentation.
I am going to contact every state Legislature in the state of maine and inform them what this company is doing. It is dead wrong for any company to misrepresentation or to not cancel your service. We consumers really need to do detail home work on foreign companies.
Please if anyone has trouble with smart energy contact your local Public Utilities Commissioner in your state their # is on your electric bill, file complaints and contact your local state legislature to stop this company from what their doing. I informed smart energy Im going to make them go blind on paperwork because I have nothing but time on my hands & I love writing hand written letters.
Please dont let your elderly parents etc fall for things such as this.
