Get Credit for Getting Green Electricity

Renewable energy or green energy plans get energy produced in part by wind power, solar power, or hydroelectric dams. Unfortunately, once electricity from renewable sources enters the power grid, there is no way to trace it. While many Met-Ed customers want to take advantage of green energy, most are frustrated by this fact. However, there is a way for consumers to still support renewable energy even though the electricity entering their home isn’t 100% green.

When a renewable energy generator produces  1 megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity, it will issue a  renewable energy credits (RECs), or renewable energy certificate to represent that 1 MWH of electricity. These RECs are tradable and can be bought and sold by individuals and corporations that want to support renewable energy. As a result, Pennsylvania retail electricity suppliers offering green electricity plans rely on purchasing RECs. So, if  you’re looking to help grow renewable energy check out these here are five options for the Met-Ed area.

24-Month Green Energy Plan

For a two-year renewable energy plan powered by wind, consider the Constellation 24 Month Green Home Power Plan. The plan is 6.89 cents per kWh and there’s no monthly recurring charge. The plan does include a $150 early termination fee. However, Constellation offers a 90-Day Satisfaction Guarantee, so you can cancel anytime within the first three months with no fee.

Two months before your contract ends, you’ll receive two written notices explaining your renewal options. If you don’t respond, your term can continue for another 24 months at the price stated in the notices. However, you can cancel this renewal any time with no early termination fee.

As an added incentive when you’re comparing plans, note that Constellation offers a Refer a Friend program. With this program, you and your friend will each get a $50 gift card if your friend signs up with the company.
